Diet

It can be difficult to know what is best for the planet, which is why we need better information as consumers (a more robust, uniform and trustworthy system for carbon reporting is key).

In the meantime, changes to our diet can make a huge difference when done by enough of us.

What can you do?
Picture
Eat a more plant based diet: the higher up the food chain you go the more resources are used and the greater the environmental impact as a general rule. By cutting out the middlemen we can significantly reduce our emissions. It’s not as simple as saying that all meat is bad, animals used as part of regenerative farming practices can actually be part of the solution. However, most meat does not come from truly sustainable sources, so less meat is generally a good thing for the planet (and us).
  • Cut down on the worst offenders: not all food is equal in terms of environmental impact. Beef & lamb tend to have the largest environmental impact (summary here).

The Food Pyramid - the higher up you go the more resources are required

Grow your own fruit & veg: if you’ve got space/ time this is a great way to reduce your emissions.
Picture
Reduce food waste: which is responsible for a significant proportion of global emissions.
Picture
Eat locally grown & seasonal: surprisingly, and with the exception of air-freighted goods, transport emissions tend to be a small portion. However, locally grown/ seasonal produce is better than getting those same items from abroad.
Impact depends on:
Picture
  • How carbon intensive your current diet is
  • What alternatives are available to you
    • Are you able to access better alternatives?
    • Are they affordable?
Picture
Cost - depends on what foods you switch to: meat and dairy is nearly always more expensive compared to high protein foods like beans & lentils. On the flip side, some “meat alternatives” can be expensive.
Picture
Effort - depends on what you're used to cooking: it can require a bit of effort to learn new recipes and source new foods. We’d recommend starting with one meal a week and building on this over time.
